The Bees play Kirkwall
Published by Matthias July 21st, 2006 in Gigs.
Upbeat indie rockers The Bees from the Isle of Wight are hitting Orkney, playing Fusion on August 4th as part of their highlands and islands tour. They are a decent retro throwback band, complete with cheery tracks, instrument swapping, beards and wooly hats.

The venues they are playing seem to be the same ones as the Crimea played earlier this month which is a very positive sign as it means we’re in the books of new indie circuit. Hopefully the gig will be well attended and we can get Orkney into the good graces of the promoter.
Orkney’s own punk rockers The Gutter Sound are back from their maternity leave and have picked up the support slot. It will be interesting to see if motherhood has tempered the outfits or microphone straddling exuberance of lead singer Erika. We hope not:

instrument swapping its allwayz gr8 fun i can’t play anything else mayb the electric triangle now and again lol but sure is impressive 2 watch when it’s done well..’death cab for cutie’ now that vocalist is on form in this area playing the guitar with a drumstick at t in the park before joining in on the drums!
Wow I saw death cab at T too. How good were they!!!
I shall have to check them out, yeah, death cab for cutie are one of my favourite bands. I love them, they’re amazing.
Me too. Havent seen them yet either but keen to check them out.
yeh nothing beats a bit of Death Cab, on back onto the subject…the gutter sound, yes - coming back from the gutter. Did you hear the singer from Jimmy Eat World had a baby aswell? (this is a private joke if anyone thinks i’m being serious here, listen to both bands and you’ll get it)
Hullo,
The Gutter Sound are having a few drummer “issues” at the moment - anyone interested in having a go? You can mail me at fm.orkney@tesco.net or erica@theguttersound.com
Luv,
E x.
yeah drum machines never get tired and smell a hell of a lot better than the real thing.
Maybe I should have kept up with the drums, I would have had like 8 years into playing them by now, and it would be an easy time killer when I’m bored, there goes my chances of a local band, and the blast I would have had swapping instruments for the heck of it, and trying out a guitar.
Well sadly we won’t have the pleasure of the Gutter Sound for this one as they are still drummer-less. The excellent James Bishop Band are replacing them though, and I hear they are working on a new album, so we can expect some fresh material.
Yeh i’m quite glad to see The James Bishop band, been a fan of him for years. It’s a shame that we don’t get to see the return of The Gutter Sound though, but I guess maybe they’ll return with a better gig than this one.
This gig was chosen by the herald as ‘The Choice’ in their events pages. It also mentions the creation of this new highlands & islands circuit - it’s a company called Beyond Promotions that set it up. We like them.
