Stave Natives / Roll Machine / Dazed
Published by Dazed July 17th, 2006 in Reviews.
Saturday night saw the first in a string of events intended to display the increasingly creative and widespread band movement in Orkney. Although there was a low turn out (a disappointing trend in such events) the atmosphere was relaxed and everyone enjoyed the wealth of talent on offer.
First band of the night ‘Dazed’ (to which I must admit membership) had a nervous start, not least from yours truly on guitar. Although I try to avoid excuses I must point out here Jamie, our rhythm guitarist, was in France so we were a little under strength. However, after a slowish start I thought we picked up and the acoustic section went down well with the meager audience. Points of note in the set include; Ready made by RHCP, Purple Haze by Hendrix and Crosses by Jose Gonzales.
Roll Machine, another undeniable heavyweight in the youth scene played 50% of their own material and as ever impressed the audience with soaring solos and a scarily accurate emulation of such bands as Guns and Roses and The Animals. The band displayed complete confidence all through their set and stuck to songs that struck chords with Orkney’s classic rock audience. I personally thought House of the Rising sun was the high point in the set.
Next up were organisers, sound engineers and all round great performers, The Stave Natives. The band played a completely original set and didn’t show any signs of nervousness even after one inebriated fan climbed to the stage in an attempt to get closer to the music. Seona Dunsmuir displayed exceptional talent on both vocals and guitar. She was backed up solidly by bass and drums, creating a surprisingly full sound for three musicians. The newest addition to their repertoire ‘Out cold (on a public convenience floor)’ proved to be on of their best with a catchy guitar hook and a wry look at Orkney’s underage drinking problems.
Lets hope this is the first of many Orkney Band nights as the music scene in Orkney continues to flourish.

I think that there are some misconceptions about getting audiences along to gigs in Orkney. We had over 130 people show up for Blindspot, Sea Monkeys & Vague Inspiration at our gig in the Town Hall, which paid for the venue and earned £220 in total for the bands.
The problem for this one definitely wasn’t the talent on show, it’s just that the promoting was too last minute. For our gig, as well as the newspaper ad and preview pieces in the papers and on Radio Orkney, we had posters and flyers out all over the place more than month in advance, tickets for sale in several locations about town, and each band were allocated tickets to sell to their mates.
I enjoyed Sheona’s performance at the Orkney Songwriter’s Night in Firelounge last year. Good to see that she is keeping up the songwriting.
i still have to hear roll machine they are allways in the paper i’v missed every gig though
Heh, I never even knew about this.
Does anyone know when the next one is? We were talking to Sheona and I think BlindSpot may appearing in the next one.
A while I think ,I know we are appearin in one in Hoy, I beleive though its not under the name “orkney bands night” as such. The thought was for it to change location so the next time theres an orkney bands night it may be in stromness. There is a stave natives website google them and you can grab her email off that.
