Next Big Thing: Uffie

“Get low and do the tootsie roll”
Signed to hipper than now Paris label Ed Banger Records, Uffie is the next big thing on the “we’re never going to stop doing this and no we’re not electroclash and it wasn’t a fad” scene. She’s bound to play Trash lots and tour with the Soulwax boys and be remixed by Justice - it’s beginning to feel like electro-pop-idol.
On saying that, debut Pop The Glock is dirty electro at it’s finest. After a Whitey-sounding drumroll it kicks into a spoken word vocal, backed by a juicy vocoder. It’s captivating to hear a foreign take on the london-spit, and it’s much softer, coming off like a cute sounding Sov.
While Uffie’s voice and style is closer to the likes of Peaches, listening to her immediately reminded me of when I heard MIA’s Galang for the first time. I guess it’s just the out-of-nowhere girl with a synthesizer that does it for me. Of course, Uffie & MIA are coming from completely different quarters, with the new girl on the scene treading the Miami/Paris/Fashion boards rather than the Sri-Lanka/Refugee/London/Art-School-with-Elastica pilgrimage.
