Next Big Thing: Uffie

Uffie“Get low and do the tootsie roll”
Signed to hipper than now Paris label Ed Banger Records, Uffie is the next big thing on the “we’re never going to stop doing this and no we’re not electroclash and it wasn’t a fad” scene. She’s bound to play Trash lots and tour with the Soulwax boys and be remixed by Justice - it’s beginning to feel like electro-pop-idol.

On saying that, debut Pop The Glock is dirty electro at it’s finest. After a Whitey-sounding drumroll it kicks into a spoken word vocal, backed by a juicy vocoder. It’s captivating to hear a foreign take on the london-spit, and it’s much softer, coming off like a cute sounding Sov.

While Uffie’s voice and style is closer to the likes of Peaches, listening to her immediately reminded me of when I heard MIA’s Galang for the first time. I guess it’s just the out-of-nowhere girl with a synthesizer that does it for me. Of course, Uffie & MIA are coming from completely different quarters, with the new girl on the scene treading the Miami/Paris/Fashion boards rather than the Sri-Lanka/Refugee/London/Art-School-with-Elastica pilgrimage.

Quite liked the electro sound-world but can’t hear the words well enough for a wannabe second generation female Eminem

i like the music, but her voice has that prounouce-every-syllable eighty’s hip-hop sound, which get’s a little annoying (you know , de la soul…. c’mon… you KNOW). but love the electro beats. would listen to it a bit, but no substatial cravings.
(oh, let’s stop calling all the whitey-’rappers’ eminem-wannabes, em’s out)

“like dough, dough i like, guys call me when the feel freaky-hot” has got to be the worst lyric ever to have stuck in your head: i swear i’ve been saying it to people all day without even realising.

Uffie’s playing at the art school in Glasgow on August 4th and I’m tempted to head down for it. I don’t think I would be able to stomach a twee night at the bees knowing what I was missing out on a few hundred miles south.

  12. 12 Ian

Yeah, I have the exact same thing in my head also. Except I tend to leave out “guys call me when they feel freaky-hot” part. I keep that line to myself :]

  13. 13 Belinda (Sydney)

Hey, yeh, this girl’s cute but i think Konichiwa Bitches By Robyn is better executed…check it out….

  14. 14 Matthias

Ah yes Robyn what a legend.. how did the world do without a Swedish Missy Elliot for so long? Tube It

  15. 15 Owen
